The 4 G of dehorning

1. The Good moment : as soon as possible and before 4 weeks : the younger they are, the more they are easy to handle . At this age the veins come just under the skin. 
2. Good contention : a lamb that does not move is dehorning easier for the farmer. This represents 80% of a successful dehorning. 
3. Good technicity : mow prior to properly locate the horn. Cauterize in 10 seconds without pressing too hard (10 seconds max). Make a furrow of 4-5 mm. Cauterization, not a burn. 
4. Good pain management after dehorning : apply a spray cleaner that cools cauterization. Treat against flies. Leave under careful observation the following 48 hours. Avoid putting animals outside in wet weather.
